Worry Warts

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

So often I remind those I speak to, to keep the faith.  It’s going to be okay.  We often talk about trust in God.  We also commonly discuss the scripture of Matthew 6:33 (“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”) What we don’t discuss very much is the detriment of worry to our lives which was the basis of Jesus’ teaching that includes this verse.  Yes, you have sent up a prayer to the Father with such confidence that he is the God of solutions and unraveling messes but in the same evening you worry yourself to sleep wondering if he even heard your prayer.  Every time I write or speak, I try to convey what I feel He wants to tell you.  You have to obtain that blessed assuring confidence in him that he has brought you this far and shown you the miraculous already in a short amount of time (if you are willing to soften your heart to see it).  But then, you say, “Okay Lord, if it was you that last time, just do this one more thing and I will be sold out.  I won’t worry anymore, and I will trust in You, and You will be my God.”

I always claimed worrying as a productive measure in my life.  WRONG!  Worry changes nothing.  You don’t add one day to your life by worrying about or even one minute.  In fact, worrying shortens your life – heart burn, unnecessary stress, heart problems, anxiety, and the list goes on.  Here are the statistics on what we fret over: 40% of it will NEVER happen, 30% of the time what people are worrying over is something in the past that cannot be changed, and 12% of people focus their attention (and worry) on the opinions of others that cannot be controlled.

We are not fretting over the right things. I think if we could look into the Throne Room of Heaven, we would see that the Lord is up there saying, “If you are going to worry, why not be concerned about pleasing me?  I am the Lord your God…  I am the only one that can change anything for your good anyway.”

Look at Matthew 6:27. “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”  Jesus is saying worrying is irrelevant.  STOP.  THINK about it… WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SOLVED A PROBLEM BY WORRYING ABOUT IT?  I have never heard someone say, “ I was behind on my bills, so I worried my way out of debt.”  IT DOESN’T WORK!  Sleepless nights, bottles of pill, stress induced vomiting, IT DOESN’T WORK!  Money will not appear on your desk, bills will not get paid, illness will not be healed, kids will not stop acting up.  WORRY DOESN’T WORK – GOD DOES!!

Turn to God.  Lay your troubles on Him (I Peter 5:7).

Let Him show you the way.
Let Him take care of the problems.
Let go and let God.
